The lacquer ware produced in Fukui prefecture is called Echizen-nuri.
The origin of Echizen-nuri lacquer ware goes back to the sixth century, about 1,500 years ago.
For the economic stability of the region, it is said that the 26th Emperor Keitai had recommended his people to produce lacquer wares. From the processing of the wood and to the final decoration it takes several dozens craftsmen, at that time manual labor, to complete the process of lacquer ware which gave jobs to many of its citizens.
Echizen-nuri lacquer ware is lacquered in many layers therefore it has a smooth surface to it.
