BIZEN from Okayama is one of the popular chinaware in the world and is also one of the oldest pottery making techniques in Japan, introduced more than 1000 years ago. The BIZEN in its rustic simplicity was made popular in the 16 century by the famous tea ceremony master SEN NO RIKYU. It is a preferred pottery in the tea ceremony for the reason that it portrays the “WABI” mentality or beauty in imperfection. The BIZEN is identified with the absence of no glaze and is called “art of soil and fire” in that the modification of the soil and the firing used makes a variety of results in the pottery.
